Event description
  • TRADE WINDS RETURNS: CUBA, BRAZIL & BEYOND
  • 21 New Bands – 21 Improvised Compositions
  • Trade Winds creator and bassist Matt Geraghty and producer/saxophonist Zé Luis will present 21 brand new groups with over 30 musicians from Cuba, New Orleans, West Africa, San Juan and Brazil.
  • Trade Winds aims to reveal the cultural and musical footprint that was made by the transatlantic trade route while unlocking the power of a united collective of musicians from around the world.
  • With Trade Winds musicians meet for the first time on stage and new improvised compositions are created live in the moment. The only rules – Don’t talk. Just play.
  • “There is a genuine conversation going on, unfolding in real time and alive with the spirit of exploration.” – NPR All Things Considered
  • “Once completed this is likely to be the most ambitious musical project of its kind” –2016, Latin Jazz Network
  • Geraghty with Zé Luis, and filmmaker Laura Newman, have just completed this 3rd season of the Trade Winds web series in Cuba where in 21 days they produced 21 new music videos across multiple genres of music including traditional Cuban folkloric music such as Changüí and Nengon, and other renowned styles like Afro-Cuban, Son, Rumba and Cuban Hip-Hop.
  • “With Trade Winds we aspire to reveal the musical legacy of the trade routes while searching for a new model for music making in our globalized society.” says Geraghty.
  • Matt and his team plan to continue their travels to the East Coast of Brazil and finally to West Africa filming and recording collaborations with local musicians, sharing their story and revealing common roots of rhythm and musical language.
  • To date, 250 premier musicians have collaborated in these unique sessions documenting improvised collaborations in New York, New Orleans, San Juan and Havana.
